I'll start this off...
Above is a link to my NATAL chart. It is a picture of the stars at the time I was born. If you look at my first house, you will see that there are NO planets in it.
Look at the outside of the wheel and you will see the symbols for each sign. You can see that Leo is the sign that is at the very beginning of my first house. You will see the letters AC off to the left of the chart. This is for my Ascendent or rising sign. SInce Leo is at that spot, Leo is my rising sign.
Your rising sign is the way you appear to the outside world.

Also, found:
Leo Rising or Sun in the 1st: Can anybody say showmanship! This is an aspect of the performer. When you recognize a public figure with this placement, you are seeing star quality. You recognize in them (and in yourself) the gift of gab, magnanimity and benign power. These people never seem to have to work very hard for recognition or celebrity- it's a birth rite! Their movies earn mega box office, their albums go platinum and their books are best sellers. They know what the public wants and how to give it to them. Notable Personalities - Elton John (Leo Rising) Mae West (Sun in 1st)

and this: at www.byzant.com/astrology/ascendants.aspLeo on the First House Cusp With Leo rising, you are quite possibly the most confident person you know. What other people think doesn't have much of an effect of you. You have no problem at all letting others know what you think about any topic under the sun. Some people might see you as a bit of a braggart or a show off, though, so be careful. This can cause problems in relationships, because you often hog the spotlight and find it difficult to listen or compromise.

I wouldn't say this is totally accurate for me. I do have a lot of confidence, but I am concerned about what others think, but not to the point that it holds me back. Yes, I am opinionated and I can be...umm...well... the center of attention and actually enjoy it. I think that I've really worked on listening and compromise.
