Read the labels before buying. They are treating people like slave labor. First they make them pay large amounts of money to come and work there from other countries like $2000. then when they get there they take their passports away and sometimes do not pay them for 6 months. They do not let them have residency permits so they can not go outside the clothing factories. Some of the women are raped. One just hung herself after being raped in the bathroom. Who sells clothes made in Jordan? Gloria Vanderbelt and what a surprise Wal-Mart. Modern day slavery is not okay. The USA has a fair trade agreement with Jordan yet lets these horrible practises continue. Disney and Wal-Mart go out of their way to spend thousands protecting their logos and trademarks but not their workers who are being beaten and abused. Please read this article and educate yourself about the factories in Jordan. organicclothing.blogs.com/my_weblog/2006/05/jordan_a_river_.html

thanks for this trout! this is yet another hideous example of slave labour.
the same or similar is happening in india and in china, where garments are being turned out in their thousands, and the workers paid so poorly that it is almost unbelievable. small children are churning out teeshirts and tops at a rate which we could barely imagine, and these are being sold on market stalls all over the place.
i have boycotted any clothing made by jordan, india (with the notable exception of fairly traded clothing) and china, because i would like to see this deleterious practise abolished immediately.

Alot of the workers in Jordan are coming in from India and China so not only is it bad in their own countries when they pay large sums of money to try to work else where they get turned into slaves there too.
China sends people to prison for speaking out against their oppressive government and then while in jail they are forced to make cars and do other kinds of slave labor or have their kidney taken out and sold for profit. I for one am not a fan of the Chinese government. I hate what they have done to the Tibetans. George Bush has gotten the USA in horrible debt with his stinky war for oil and now we are in debt to China which is really not a good place to be.
The kids that are forced to work in the silk factories in India really have it bad. It is horrible work and horrible working conditions. In India some children have to take a part old used medical needles and end up catching diseases. These kids should have real homes and be in school.
