I personally have long supported the Salvation Army, I have found that it will distribute all the money it raises to the cause it was raised for!
There maybe other charities that raise money for disasters that distribute all the funds collected but this is one I'm sure of.

My problem with the Salvation Army is they are notorious for discrimination. www.workingforchange.com/article.cfm?ItemID=11613Perhaps these recent storms are exposing the fact that we need to help improve charities so that we know what kind of an organization we are giving to including how they treat people and how they distribute the money they collect. I think if they collect money from the public then they should be held accountable to treat people fairly and use the money in a fair fashion. Discrimination has no place in the new world. trout

I was not aware that they discriminated against anyone I was just impressed with the fact that did not keep the money for their own pet projects unlike the Red Cross as the article said. Having said that, please understand that I do my best in my personal life and in our movement not to willfully discriminate against anyone. But do religious orders not have the right to limit membership to those who share their beliefs? Would they not have the right to refuse membership to lets say a devil worshiper? Please remember just asking a question here

Believe me I do not think you discriminate I just think people should know that the Salvation Army does. I think if any charity excepts money from the public then they should not discriminate or else they can just fund their projects by themselves ~ they won't be getting any of my money because I believe we can vote every day by where and how we spend it.and I for one will not give to a organization that I know discriminates. What is so Christian about discrimination? Nothing.... ~ I just feel there is no place for it in this world and if organizations do it then I for one do not mind exposing it. I do not want to support organizations that are backwards in their thinking. I gave my money at the neighborhood healthfood store where they were taking it directly to the victims of Katrina that had been moved to a church in our local big city.... Last winter in Bali there were lots of parties for the Tsunami victims and did we think much of our money that we donated to get into these parties would make it to where it was suppose to go... sadly no.
I just think this is a good time to think and examine and talk about how charites work seeing how we do seem to need them.

"On July 10, the Washington Post broke the story with a report about "the White House['s] … 'firm commitment' to the Salvation Army to issue a regulation protecting such charities from state and city efforts to prevent discrimination against gays in hiring and domestic-benefits." In exchange, said the Post, the Salvation Army agreed to spend nearly $1 million on lobbyists and strategists to vigorously and publicly support the president's pet project."
what a waste of one million dollars that would have been that could have helped the poor
Basically my point is not just about the Red Cross or Salvation army ~ In my opinion I think charities that collect money from the public need to 1) use the money how it was intended and 2) not discriminate or use it towards pay offs so they can get away with discrimination
Charity money needs to not be wasted and to go to the people it is targeted and intended for ~ I do not think that is unreasonable for the public to want their money to go to good use and not end up in a politicians or a crooked person's pocket.

I guess my primary concern when these disasters happen is for my money get to where I intend it to go. But I will certainly take another look at who I choose to deliver that money. My personal belief has always been to support those organizations that are for the greater good and do not harm others in their day to day existence. That list I'm afraid is getting ever so much smaller. Thank you for opening my eyes a little more, this is always a learning life isn't it!

Yes this is a learning life for sure for all of us ~ believe me I have a lot to learn just like everyone else here on the planet... and I know your intentions are good. I am just hoping we ALL pay attention to how charities operate so they can do the greatest good and so that we are aware of what they are up to and so the public can hold them accountable to not waste our donations.
Listening to public radio here I am not pleased with the Red Cross in the least they get a F- in my mind and so does FEMA. It is always good to try and be aware of what of what is going on out there so hopefully it can get improved in the future.

I just heard tonight on the ABC news that a Senator here in the USA is introducing a bill to make all charities give an accounting for all the money they take in.
The story on the news said that The Red Cross had taken in money for 9~11 and spent it else where.

I agree with this trout we need to be more aware of where it goes. I for one just give it straight to the person that needs it because when they get to be a big business someone always gets their pocket lined and the people who need it still are in need.
Wanted to add that my Mother-in-law, a very wonderful, loving christian woman helped out red cross for many years until she caught someone lining their pockets and she quit them for that reason.
