I live in a wonderful 1920's Craftsman home that was an amazing gift from Divine when my children and I moved out of the house when I left my now-ex-husband. It is a two story brick and stucco with a fabulous front poarch, 4 bedrooms so the kids can have their own rooms, a big yard, little money down, and a contract with the owner until I was on my feet and was able to get a bank loan.
The problem with this wonderous home is that it has VERY drafty windows (all 28 of them!), the exterior doors should be replaced, and it has minimal insulation. Because of its size and the odd shaped windows it will cost me a fortune that I didn't have to replace them. So, I plugged along this last winter with HORRENDOUS heating bills. (remember, I live in the north land with very cold winters).
Anyway, I got home yesterday to find a letter from our city offices. It appears that our town was given a one time grant for $300,000 for renovations to homes in specific areas. My home is one of them. You have to apply for the grants and there is an income limit (which I meet if they don't count child support), but if accepted, I would get a $30,000 grant for new windows, doors, siding to my soffits, and insulation!!
They have a requirement that you live in the home for so long after you get the grant, but they forgive a portion each year you stay. They do that to prevent people from making money off of it by fixing up their homes and then selling them for the extra money.
Hopefully the application is sitting in my mailbox as I type and I am going to get it off ASAP if I do meet income guidelines.
Anyway, I just thought it was cool that I start the EFT mantra and I get that in the mail.
